Empties, Declutters and Project Pans

Empties: Hits and Misses

February 22, 2016

How do beauty bloggers finish products so quickly? Mine seem to last forever. Laura over at Whimsy is Forever embarked on a project pan a while back, and her posts inspired me to do an empties post. And boy did I struggle to finish products. When I finished some I ended up accidentally tossing away at least a quarter of my products. These were predominantly hair and skincare products.  In addition, last year in October/November I decided to declutter my makeup collection so I had even fewer items for this post. These were the ones that made it to the bin only after they were photographed.

Body butter

The Body Shop Pink Grapefruit Body Butter

Everybody loves The Body Shop, let’s state that as fact. Walking into a store is a bit like walking into a heaven where you’re surrounded by the most delicious scents. Their body butters are very moisturising and deliciously scented, but I find that they don’t last as long as their other products. Or maybe I’m just using too much. Pink Grapefruit is one of my all time favourite The Body Shop scents. Which is amazing because I cannot stomach the actual fruit. The pink grapefruit range is not always in stores, so I will repurchase if I can get my hands on it.

Essence Products

Essence Gel Eyeliner in Miami Ink

Why did I buy this, if I don’t even like gel eyeliner? Well it was on sale for some ridiculously low price that couldn’t be passed. It hasn’t even been used and it’s too old to give to someone.

Essence 3D eyeshadow duo in Irresistible Foxtrot

This gorgeous eyeshadow duo consisted of a gorgeous bronze and a peach shade, well that was before it broke in my carry on luggage on a flight to Cape Town. Despite this, I continued to use the eyeshadow by mixing the shades together as one. The resulting shade was gorgeous and I managed to use at least half of the product, but because the shadow was broken I experienced a lot of fall out. The only reason I tossed this duo is because I bought a new one in the exact shade.

Essence Get Big! Lashes Volume Curl Mascara

This is the second mascara that I tried from the brand that I am disappointed in. With this one, my problem is not so much with the formula but the brush. It is huge and takes so much product out of the tube that it is messy to apply and always left smudges on my eyelids. There was still some product in the tube when I tossed it. I may give Essence mascara another try, but I’d have to first check in store that the tube doesn’t have a large wand.

Peel off Mask and BB Cream

Avon Hint of Nature Purifying Tea Tree and Cucumber Peel off Mask

This mask worked the first time I used it, but it wasn’t very efficient. After that, it never dried properly in order for the product to peel off my skin. It’s at least 50% full and I won’t buy it again.

Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream in Medium

This made my face so oily and shiny. It’s probably a few years old and still relatively full. I couldn’t part with it as it felt wasteful, but it’s most likely rancid now. Needless to say, I won’t be repurchasing.

Pillow Mist and Beautifying Oil

Oh so Heavenly Wish Upon a Star Pillow Soothing Mist

This pillow soothing mist is lavender scented and was nice, but why stop at your pillows? Spray all of your bed linens with it. If I didn’t do this, it would have probably lasted longer. I got it as part of a gift set. I’ve repurchased a new bottle already.

The Body Shop Beautifying Oil in Satsuma

This little bottle of The Body Shop Beautifying Oil in Satsuma lasted ages. A little literally goes a long way, making it such great value for money. It can be used for hair, face and body but I only used it as a body oil. It is lightweight and rubs easily into the skin without leaving a film like feeling. Although The Body Shop doesn’t state this as one of the benefits of the beautifying oil, I am pretty sure it lightens stretch marks, because the oil lightened mine. There was a dramatic difference for me, but it didn’t happen overnight. It needs to be used continuously. The next time I buy one, I’ll try the Moringa or Shea butter version, as although I loved the sweet satsuma scent, I got bored of it after a while and like I said, the bottle lasts for ages.

toner and cream

African Extracts Rooibos Purifying Vanishing Cream

I bought this to get rid of shine in my T zone and blemishes caused by acne. Also because it was dirt cheap. It helped with the T zone a little too much. Long story short, it overworked and made my skin too dry. This won’t be on my shopping list anytime soon.

Avon Hint of Nature Hydrating Peach and Cotton Toner and Clicks Skin Collect Aloe Vera & Omega 3 & 6 Refreshing Toner

A toner is a toner is a toner, and I am not going to splurge on it. More expensive toners make my skin feel exactly the same as cheap ones. There’s nothing special about these ones,  but I’d definitely repurchase. As long as it’s alcohol free and affordable, I’ll use any brand’s toner.

Elizabeth Arden Maybelline and Lush

Lush Popcorn Lip Scrub

This scrub is amazing and smells so delicious. It’s a good thing that its edible, because trust me you’ll want to lick if from your lips. It lasts a really long time, so I would like to try one of the other scents at Lush.

Maybelline Baby Lips in Cherry Me

When Baby Lips arrived in SA, I bought a bunch of them. If someone told me I would finish not one but two lip balms in one month, I would think they’re joking. Much like pens, lip balms always go missing. This stick was misplaced at least two dozen times, so finishing it was quite an achievement. Baby Lips is not a bad lip balm, but it’s not better than Labello or Lip Ice, which is much cheaper. So unless I can get it on sale, I won’t be repurchasing.

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream Lip Protectant

The only reason why I hadn’t lost this lip balm is because I kept it in a tray on my cabinet and only used it in the mornings and evenings after I cleansed my face. Definitely would repurchase.

Eyeshadow Palette

Profusion 36 shade palette

This palette is so old, the name is completely rubbed off. I probably got it in my first year at university when I first started getting into make up. Honestly, this has not been used for at least 2 to 3 years. The only reason why I kept is because I wear predominantly nudes and bronze shades, and only kept this for the colourful shades, which I never used because I don’t wear bright eyeshadows. I bought a quad from The Body Shop, so should I ever need to wear bright colours and that is sufficient for now. This palette was great while it was new, but it’s time to move on. The shadows are cheap quality and although most of the colours are pigmented, they are chalky. I won’t be repurchasing.
