Have you seen the cost of avocados these days? With the drought and inflation, the costs of avocado are getting so high, soon only the rich will be able to afford them. Which is why when I do have one, nothing can go to waste. Back when I was younger, my friends and I used to make our own face masks from items in our kitchens such as eggs, yogurt and avocado. Of course, back then you didn’t need to sell a limb in order to afford one. The other day I was making a salad, and I had half an avocado left from the day before and the following day it was overripe! These fruits are so temperamental. They’re hard for weeks on end and are ripe for two seconds! Although it could not be eaten, there was no way that I was going to a let it go to waste. So I whipped up this super easy DIY Avocado Mask.
Super easy DIY Avocado Mask
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1-2 teaspoons honey (I didn’t really measure, so it’s up to you if you want to use 1 or 2 teaspoons).
Mash up your avocado. Stir in the lemon and honey. Apply to a clean dry face and leave on for 15 minutes. Wipe off with a cloth and wash your face with warm water and if needed, a gentle cleanser. Moisturise as normal.
The leftover face mask can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. A 1/4 avocado should suffice for one use, but I had a half so that’s what I used.
Benefits of Avocado Face Masks
Avocado is a rich source of Vitamin A, B, E, and K, which are beneficial for the skin. These vitamins help maintain your skin tone and help reduce early ageing of the skin cells. It also potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium and copper. These minerals help keep the skin hydrated and moisturised.
I had included lemon juice only to keep the avocado from turning browner than it already was, but it turns out that it also has benefits for your skin. It helps revive dull and dry skin, brightens skin tone and helps remove acne marks.
Honey is a great antioxidant with many benefits. Most notably it helps slow down ageing and helps create a glow. I also used it in the mask to help keep the avocado together.
So what are you waiting for? Find you a ripe (or slightly overripe) avocado and whip up this super easy DIY Avocado Mask. Looking for more DIY skincare recipes? Check out this Homemade Apple Facemask.
